Working in events with children is truly one of the most rewarding experiences. There’s nothing like the instant feedback you get—those bright, excited faces tell you everything you need to know about how you're doing.
But let’s be honest, it’s also one of the most demanding. Kids don’t hold back their feelings. If they’re not enjoying something, you’ll know right away. They won’t politely wait until the event is over to share their dissatisfaction. Instead, they’ll lose interest, and chaos might unfold.
So, what can you do when your little clients aren’t happy?
Damage Control: Be Ready to Pivot
Always have a backup plan—Plan B activities are a lifesaver. Kids’ attention spans are short, and their rejection can be swift. Be prepared to switch things up quickly to keep the momentum going.
Tag Team with Your Partner
If things aren’t going well, let your co-facilitator step in. This signals to the kids that the previous activity is over, and something new and exciting is starting. A fresh face and energy can make all the difference.
Re-Energize the Group
A quick movement activity—like a fun stretch or dance break—can do wonders. It helps reset their spirits and brings back the excitement you need to move forward.
Pay Attention to the Influencers
Every group has those kids who set the tone for the others. If they’re on board, the rest will follow. Make an extra effort to engage them and win their approval—it’s the secret to keeping the entire group happy.
The Harshest Critics, the Kindest Hearts
Kids are, without a doubt, the toughest audience. But they’re also the most genuine. If you manage to entertain them, their smiles and laughter will instantly reward your efforts. By the end of the day, you’ll go home tired but filled with warmth, remembering their giggles and joy more than any of the challenges.
There’s nothing quite like it—the chaos, the creativity, and the incredible feeling of knowing you made their day.
